What Is Cache In a Computer

Firstly, cache is an access area mostly reserved for high-speed operations. It can come in form of a storage gadget or main memory. There are two main types of cache, namely, memory cache along with disk cache. The former is highly preferred because it allows programs to access similar information and instructions again and again.

If your computer can be able to retain this information and instructions in the SRAM for a long time, then it won't be able to access the slow DRAM. Hence, the speed of your system will improve. Most computers nowadays come with either L2 cache or the L3 cache. In the past, computers contained only the L1 cache. Disk cache, on the other hand, is used for accessing the commonly accessed information and instructions.

But unlike the memory cache, this cache uses conventional central memory. It is also important to note that recently accessed information from computer disks is kept in the memory buffer. When your computer program wants to access information from any of the disks, it has to check the disk cache. This helps it to know if the needed information is available.
